The Malee Scholarhip is created by Chantra Malee from SharpType.co and is providing financial assistance and mentorship to support and empower women of color as they pursue their interest in type design.
We developed the concept and design for the website, which has provided with the core and structure of its content.
While the initiative of starting a scholarship tells about the lack of women and women of color in the field of type design, we decided to also use the website as a platform to showcase typographies that have already been created by women. The section 'Women of type' gathers a growing collection of typographies created by women, and presents them through quotes as if typefaces would 'speak' about themselves. By doing this, we can already start divulging knowledge, motivation and inspiration for future type designers from the Malee website.
The split website helps to express the positive view behind the initiative of creating the Malee Scholarship: although there is plenty of work ahead in order to build equality in the type design industry, lots of achievements and great work throughout history have been done by women.
Being the scholarship an initiative created by type designers, we couldn't help asking great female typographers to create a custom typeface. TienMin Liao created the typeface for the Malee logomark and My-Lan Thuong extended the logo into the 'Malee' and 'Malee Sans' typefaces.
